My La Carlota Experience

I. Introduction

Last August. 5, 2011, we, the whole 2nd year students of  TCS prepared ourselves for our trip to La Carlota. This trip is for us to add up experience about earthquakes, sweet sarghum, sugarcane plantation, feeding cows and producing milk. We also brought cameras to take snap shots. We were very excited at because this was our very first trip this school year.

II. Places

    A. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology

Phivolcs was our first destination. In the volcanic system, I had learned about Kanlaon Volcano, Volcano monitoring, volcanic hazards and volcanos in the Philippines. In the seismological system, I had learned about Phivolcs Seismic Monitoring Network, earthquake hazard prone are as in the Philippines the Philippines as an earthquake country and earthquake drills. The people from there also taught us that they would know if there's an earthquake if the seismographic paper illustrates a very high and low up, down, up, down. And lastly, I learned about how the seismographic paper works.

    B. University of the Philippines- Los Banos- La Carlota

UP- Los Banos- La Carlota was our second destination. I had only learned a little because I seated at the backmost portion. I had encountered a new word called sweet sorghum which was discussed to us by a man who works there. I had heard that they sell fungi mushrooms for P15 which can be useful to us. He also told us that before the students would study at UP, they must pass the UPCAT. And lastly, I had  learned about sweet potato or cassava that if it contains HCN, it can be poisonous to the consumers.

    C. Sugar Regulatory Administration

SRA was our third destination. The tour guide first introduced to us the area and members of SRA. The first thing that I've learned is there is about tissue culture that they preserve baby sugarcane plants using chemicals and machines. Then, I learned about trichogramma which is the biological control of  sugarcane borers. Then, I had also learned that the trichogramma chilonis is a sugarcane consumer which can destroy a sugarcane farmer's farm. And lastly, I had learned their laboratory tools like the shaker.

    D. Provincial Veterinary- La Carlota Farm

In our fourth destination, I learned nothing for no one entertained us. The place smells foul because all the feces of cows are scattered everywhere in their cage. Then, their body is almost covered with poop! We had a fun time feeding them and taking camera shots at them. Before we left, one of the shouted moo at us which "thank you for coming" as what Kara told us.

    E. Le Grand Dairy Plant

In our last destination, I learned only a little for the place inside is too much crowded and I can't hear what the worker there is saying. In producing their milk product, I had learned their processes. First, they get milk from the cow. Second, they pour it in a machine which preserves the milk. Third, the milk is sent into another machine which mixes with different flavors like chocolate, ube, mango, and pandan. And fourth, they put it in a bottle and they sell it for P35 each.

III. Summary

Last August. 5, 2011, I woke up early in the morning. I get myself prepared and I went to school at 6:00 a.m. We started our trip at 7:00 a.m. which is very late and we arrived at La Carlota at 9:00 a.m. First, we had our breakfast at Jolibee. Then, we arrived at PHIVOLCS but before arriving there, we passed a muddy field which dirted our shoes. After that, we went to UP Los Banos- La Granja Research Center. Then, we went to Sugar Regulatory Administration.

At 12 noon, we had our lunch in a little resort at La Carlota. At 1:30 p.m., we we had proceeded to Provincial Veterinary - La Carlota Farm. Then, we went to Le Grand Dairy Plant. After that, we stopped by a mini grocery store and we went back to school. During our last trip, I had a fun time with my friends even though they are very noisy because everytime when the bus passes by or overtakes, they would make fun with the people or driver in the street.
